Value
Where is the value?
We created money to allow a thousand exchanges, but see paragraphs like these:
“The decision benefits the Controller of Financial Institution A by granting ex officio — that is, without formal provocation from the parties — a right of first refusal over billion-dollar debentures of the Bankrupt Conglomerate X to Multimarket Investment Fund Y.
Debentures are debt securities issued by companies to raise funds in the capital market. In the scenario in question, these assets, owned by one of the mining companies of the bankrupt group, were auctioned in 2022 with the aim of settling liabilities with creditors.
Investment Group Z was the winner of the bidding with a bid of R$612 million, having received formal possession of the securities. However, there was a monocratic reform of the previous decision, resulting in the annulment of the auction in favor of Fund Y, which originally did not appear as a direct interested party in the ongoing action”
And this one?
“The scheme was based on the use of investment vehicles of Economic Group A, managed by a Brokerage Firm for Securities and Bonds (DTVM X), later renamed Manager Y.
Under the management of the Principal Executive, DTVM X managed investment funds — categorized as Multimarket (FIM) and Real Estate (FII) — which served as fictitious capitalization instruments for Banking Institution Z. The operation consisted of simulating capital contributions with the bank's own resources and artificially inflating the valuation of real estate assets in its portfolio.
Currently, the Principal Executive maintains ties with Manager Y, which has been the target of investigations on suspicion of being part of a scheme for transferring funds to businesses linked to family conglomerates. It was even observed that an offshore structure was opened in a low-tax jurisdiction a few days after regulatory interventions by the Central Bank in Banking Institution Z.
In the operational structure, DTVM X acted as administrator of funds linked to Economic Group A. Regulatory documents indicate that Foreign Investor P was one of the main quota holders of these funds. It was through these vehicles that Investor P contributed resources to acquire control of Banking Institution Z.”
Enough with paragraphs about money.
Only an artificial intelligence can handle financial complexities like these without getting lost.
We, humans, are better prepared to know who bakes the warm bread in the morning in the neighborhood. We know the face of the sweet grandma who sews and whom we'd rather ask for/give a blessing to, than actually fix a shirt button.
The world has left an open avenue for values like “complex financial extravagance”.
After reading Local is Our Future I learned a little about the value of local products. Those where you see the owner.
When we see the owner, we activate a layer of compassion that is harder to see in large chains.
Helena, the author of Local is Our Future, criticizes ships coming and going bringing products we can find nearby. I add that these financial manipulations are also super distant from our local reality.
Hence the title of this article: value.
What has value?
When money is enough (we know it's not, but let's suppose), people in 500 million jets making money transfers to whoever they want are well accepted.
Are they emotionally or financially well accepted?
I remember those cartoons that put two hearts in the eyes, for example of Woody Woodpecker, when he falls in love with something or someone.
How many of us get hearts in our eyes when we receive generous money transfers once or repeatedly?
Mixing feelings of passion/love with pure finances, without needing to know the origin of the money (after all, the customer is always right and it doesn't matter who they are) is encouraged by market culture. We have to serve everyone well; the customer is always right.
And so people we only know through generous money transfers approach us.
What if value lies in feeling?
Oh, now things change.
If one day someone starts using feeling as an important currency, it's quite probable that people who try to approach with generous money transfers won't get warmth in their hearts
Or at least won't get that warmth through generous money transfers. If the person approaches with kindness and joy, they might get warmth, but then why so much financial effort if there was a simpler way to get value/warmth.
When value is warmth in the heart, much changes and can change in the world.
